Facebook Connect Alternative Logout Button

Posted in , ,

I got this from a friend. The usual Facebook connect logout button is not much of a good taste. You can customize it your way. Here it goes:

<a href="#" onclick="FB.Connect.logout(function() { vid_User.fbconn.checkStatus(); }); return false;" ><img style="border:0;" id="fb_logout_image" src="images/logout_small.gif" alt="Connect"/></a>

Or this one too:

<a href="#" onclick="FB.Connect.requireSession(function() { vid_User.fbconn.checkStatus(); }); return false;" ><img style="border:0;" id="fb_login_image" src="images/connect_light_medium_short.gif" alt="Connect"/></a>

Dynamic PageTitle in ASP.NET

0

Posted in , ,

Recently I came across an issue while developing ASP.NET web application. I want the .aspx page titles to change whenever I browse a certain page on my website. After some research I was able to do this by setting the 'title' as a server control by adding runat="server" inside the tag and utilize the following in your code-behind file:

Protected pageTitle As System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlGenericControl
'VB
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

pageTitle.InnerText = "Title"

End Sub

If you are using a Masterpage:

use instead Page.Header.Title

Understanding Your Idiot Manager

0

Posted in ,

A friend recently posted this very interesting link he found in the internet. We're very much thinking about us being in the company and working our way off to the corporate ladder's bigshots. Seems like this article is a hit.

"I don't give a sh*t what you think."

That was the answer I received the very first time I asked for a raise. It was stated matter-of-factly, as if I was just another irrelevant cog in the system.

Well, I wasn't going to stand for this. I took my whopping one year of experience and left this idiot manager behind, confident that any future manager could not be worse.

I couldn't have been more wrong. Turns out he may have not been so bad after all.

Being in these situations inevitably leads one to question a boss's managerial skills. At one point or another in your career, you most likely have had this discussion with a co-worker: "So-and-so is an idiot. Can you believe that moron who never really talks to us tried to give a team pep talk and then thought we'd be thrilled about working all weekend? If he would actually listen to us, we wouldn't have been in that situation."

What I found is that whether it was the PL/1 development project from my early days to the Java/.Net world of today, the curious actions of managers and the ultimate reactions of employees determined the fate of projects and ultimately damaged the long-term success of a team. (Does anyone even code in PL/1 anymore?)

RC2 - to - 6.3 STD

0

Posted in , , , ,

Finally, I'm done with my first template development for CRE Loaded 6.3 Standard. I have been worried about this task since I first received it. I actually spent more than the normal but it is my first time so I think it's a good excuse. :-P

I have been converting templates for CRE Loaded but from older version of the same cart so it's pretty easy to grasps the new file structures are. But developing a template from one cart to another type of cart is a different story. And to add, I am converting an osCommerce template compatible to CRE Loaded 6.3 Standard.

My first few hours (to days) has been a mess. I resorted to doing the development locally in my laptop so to speed things up instead of using our company's development site. Don't blame me but I hate the loading time and I am lazy when uploading changes a dozen times for just one file. Who would like to do that? Well I managed to grasps the file structure by looking at referenced templates and the default templates already installed in CRE Loaded 6.3. But I think one of the big help aside from over-extending my patience in dueling this task is guidance and peace giventh to me from up above.

Another help is this site I found while looking for references:

http://www.creloaded.com/faq.php?cID=7

(Of course it's from CRE Loaded's website, silly me!)

Anyways, hopefully I would be efficient in specific tasks like these. I can't wait to try another template development. I just love challenges despite having to tackle dirty roads. Are you?

The Past Month

0

Posted in , , , , ,

Hi all,

I haven't been able to update my blog for over a month. I have been very very very busy with life. I had to restructure my priorities. Sad to say, blogging is one of the least but of course, it doesn't mean I'll stop blogging. To catch up, what happen to me in between my last post and today...

1.) Finally I got my PLDT DSL Connection. I had a previous rant post about PLDTMyDSL services. Apparently all is well now. I am a very satisfied customer. The internet service live up to the package I selected - a 1mbps package. I can now watch movies and anime online without having to wait a little for my browser to load. As for my SmartBro connection, it is still up here though. Hindi ko pa napaputol so I have two internet connection at home.

2.) Another happy gift for myself. The laptop I order has arrived. It is an ACER brand - "Aspire 4530". Though it didn't have the fingerprint reader feature as I have ordered (naubusan na sila ng stocks, limited lang pala yung feature) I am happy with my new gadget. Here's a short overview of my laptop's specs as I have upgraded all of the stuffs I can upgrade:

  • AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra Dual Core ZM-82 (2.2GHz, 2Mb Cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • NVIDIA® nForce® MCP77MH Chipset
  • 4.0Gb DDR2 800MHz
  • 14.1in. WXGA TFT LCD(1200x800)
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 9100M G integrated 3D graphics with up to 752Mb of Turbo Cache™
  • 500 GB SATA HDD

  • Multimedia Dolby Digital Surround Sound Effects
  • Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series GPU on 55 nm process
  • Wireless IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n mini-PCIe Wi-Fi adapter
  • Built-in 5-in-1 Card Reader
  • Built-in Intel Wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g/Draft-N) Wireless Connection
  • Built in Super Multi DVD Double Layer Drive
  • 2.4Kgs. (5.29 lbs)
  • 6 Cells (3.0-Hours battery life)
  • >> PowerXpress
  • >> Hybrid hard drives support
  • >> HyperFlash - memory modules on motherboard with ReadyBoost support
  • >> DisplayPort, HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0 support
  • >> DDR2-800 SO-DIMM
  • >> Desktop and mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) 1.0 support (DASH page)
  • >> Trusted Platform Module (TPM) support.

Indeed, I am a very very happy monkey when this piece arrived. I was able to play games here too. Thanks to my friend who helped me able to get this piece. ^_^x

3.) At long last, I am now back to gyming. A friend invited me and she's very persistent and she needs company so I'm finally back. I just started recently in Holiday Gym and Spa (or Metro Lifestyle - really depends on her). I later that day I found out that I am 3 pounds overweight so I guess I have no choice (or I really do. ^_^) but to stick my butt back to the treadmill.

4.) Fixed my attitude towards work. I have been trying to change the bad habits towards work so far I am doing well. I don't want to lose my job (I quite like my current job right now) so I have to work my butt off. ^_^x

I think these are the major things that happened in my absence to the blogging world. Hopefully I'd be able to manage my time better and make blogging a habit from then one. Wish me luck. ^_~

My Review Blog

2

Posted in , , , ,

Just started a new blog - Reviews in my Head. I intend to put my movie and anime reviews and updates in that blog. To start with I posted a welcome message and a review on the movie I watched this morning.

Hopefully I would be able to keep up with having two blogs now. I was a little bit lazy updating my blog last year so this will be a great challenge for me to be updating two blogs. Though I am not new in blogging, I am still new in blogging community, increasing traffics, technorati, blog catalog, mybloglog, and other new stuffs that emerges and change blogging. I hope I could learn those things so that I can improve my blog. Of course, any criticisms and comments will be appreciated and will be looked into for points for improvements. So much to learn, and as the saying goes, there's alwasy room for improvements.

Blogging Back

1

Posted in , ,

I just made up my mind. I'm giving paid blogging a shot. I was inspired by a friend to write and while writing, is earning. Isn't that cool? She even earned much by just blogging and I am so envious of her.

I never write when my mind does not have anything to talk about to. Even if there is - Sports, Music, Movies, Literature, or Personal, it will not matter unless there's this urgency and need to write something or voice something out. I always had my own views in each information I came across to but I don't know if it is worth putting in my blog. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Writing is not new to me anymore. I used to write poems and short stories in my early days. I even got a notebook or two filled with short poems and scribbled short stories. I even collected quotes. Hahaha... those were the days.

For me, blogging is just an outlet. I voice out my opinion on something in blogging but not that often. Hopefully I can practice my writing by this decision I made. Money does not really matter but earning while doing what you like - your hobby is not a bad thing either.

As of now, I'm planning to write blogs that involved in Movie & Anime Reviews, IT related news and tutorials, and Point of Views (Personal and Public) in certain topics. I hope I can do it.

Movie List DB

0

Posted in , , ,

I've been thinking about making a online directory of my movies as a projet. It's for the convenience of people who always asks me if I have downloaded new movies. It would be easy for them to check out those movies I had.

Another reason for this is to start practicing my programming skills. Lately, I have been learning new things from work and I wanted to preserve it into something I can see. That led me into thinking of making a simple but useful website.

If I wanted to pursue this, I have to plan things out first. I have to rekindle my designing skills again (I don't dream of making a techie and glamorous/flashy website though). Hope I can start this project soon.

Well… This list isn’t complete. There’s a lot of movies I saw since my birth lol. I don’t think this survey is true. I had watched movies beyond 85 – or more that 85 (maybe 2x or 3x this number) and I had a great life. Never had a dull moment. :D

SQL SubSelect

0

Posted in ,

I came across this examples online when I am looking for a solution in selecting data from database that starts with numbers only.

SQL Subselect

SQL Subselect Example One

Q: What Harrison Ford movies were made in 1984?

Select Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and Film_Title in
(Select Film_Title
From Film_Table
Where Film_Year equals "1984");

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Note: The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all movies made in 1984. Combined the selects get all Harrison Ford movies made in 1984.

SQL Subselect Example Two - Not In

Q: What Harrison Ford movies were not made in 1984?

Select Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and Film_Title not in
(Select Film_Title
From Film_Table
Where Film_Year equals "1984");

Air Force One
American Graffiti
Apocalypse Now
Blade Runner
Clear and Present Danger
Frantic
Hanover Street
Heroes
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Patriot Games
Presumed Innocent
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Regarding Henry
Return of the Jedi
Six Days Seven Nights
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
The Frisco Kid
The Fugitive
The Mosquito Coast
Working Girl

Note: The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all movies made in 1984. Combined with a not the selects get all Harrison Ford movies not made in 1984.

SQL Subselect Example Three - A Correlated Subquery

Q: What movies has Harrison Ford acted in with George Lucas directing?

Select Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and exists
(Select *
From Director_Film_Table
Where Director_Last_Name = "Lucas"
and Director_First_Name = "George"
and Director_Film_Table.Film_Title
= Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title);

American Graffiti
Star Wars
Note: A correlated subquery directly ties the table nested in the subquery back to a table in the query.
The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all Harrison Ford movies Directed by George Lucas. The statement "and Director_Film_Table.Film_Title = Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title" in the subselect is where both tables are "tied together" or correlated.

10/07/2008: WINDOWS HOSTING UPDATE: We have done restoring clients files, we are now in the process of restoring clients database. For windows clients, please send your database name, database user and password, and database type (MSSQL/MySQL) to support@philhosting.net together with your account domain so we can restore the database.
- From Philhosting -

After a few weeks of server downtime due to hacked servers, Philhosting is now back online. Sad to say, our files and databases are wiped out. I have to start from scratch again. I am not sure if Philhosting have any plans in compensating their clients for what happen (I sure hope they do).

I knew few people who also availed their services. They are very much disgruntled with the services they have received from them. Even the Customer Service Representative (CSR) is very much unfriendly (and in our part, rude).

I am saying that they could have changed their system NOW. There’s still a chance to improve their way of dealing with their clients. Unless they want unsatisfied clients bashing their services and the company itself.

This blog i read from an american who lived here in philippines. By the way, his blog is so interesting and it kept me reading all their stuff till the wee hours of the night (or dawn). I am quoting this one from their blog.

Here's the url so that you can go check it out too...

http://www.liveinthephilippines.com/blog/

~ () ~

Recently, with “AmericanLola” participating in the blog, there has been some talk about learning the local language wherever you are living in the Philippines. I can tell you, based on my experience, that only a small percentage of foreigners living here take the time to learn the local language. This is true especially of Americans.

I have a little joke that I keep handy when the situation is right:

Q: Do you know what they call somebody who can speak two languages?
A: Sure, it’s called “bilingual.”

Q: Do you know what they call somebody who can speak more than two languages?
A: Sure, it’s called “multilingual.”

Q: Do you know what they call somebody who can speak only one language?
A: Hmmm…. I can’t think of an answer.

The answer is - an American!

This is very true, and most Americans speak only English. Go to Europe, the average person there can speak 3 or 4 languages. Here in the Philippines people can speak multiple languages as well (let’s not get into the whole debate over what is a language and what is a dialect, nobody will ever win). Why do Americans find it so hard to learn another language?

A few years ago, a friend from the States was here visiting me. He was telling me that even in the short time that I have been gone (7+ years) the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico had gotten much worse than when I was there. He was very upset about how the Mexicans coming into the States didn’t even take the time to learn how to speak English. Now, that has been a stickler for Americans for years, it bothers us that people would come to our country, yet they don’t make any effort to learn to speak English so that they can blend in with the rest of the country.

I sat there listening to my friend, and suddenly it struck me. Can I speak fluent Tagalog or Cebuano? No. Hmm… I thought… “how many Americans who come here make an effort to learn Tagalog or the language in their local region?” The answer was clear to me - almost none do. Yet, most of us are upset about the fact that the Mexicans come to the States and do not make any effort to learn English. Seems hypocritical, don’t you think?

Well, the fact is that I can speak some Cebuano (that is the language of choice where I live - also regularly called Bisaya). I have gone to classes on two different occasions for a couple of months each. I can speak enough Cebuano to get by in public, but I am not fluent. I can understand maybe 70% of what I hear, at least in a general way. I intend to keep making a personal effort toward learning the language. When you go out in public, people appreciate it when you can speak even a few words of their language. They are clearly in joy when they see that!

Going back to AmericanLola, I have met her and her husband on several occasions, and I consider them to be friends, even good friends. When I have seen them converse in Cebuano, or talk with waiters or clerks in Cebuano, I have been so impressed (and jealous) by it! Now, here are two people who not only made the effort to learn enough to get by, they are as fluent as they could possibly be. Feyma has told me that when she speaks with AmericanLola the language is indistinguishable from a local speaker. Now, to me that is impressive.

How about you? Do you intend to learn the language when you get here? How do you feel about others coming into your country when they don’t make an effort to learn the language?

~ Quoted from an entry from http://www.liveinthephilippines.com/blog/ ~
