Economic Crisis and the Philippines

4

Posted in , ,

Late last year, a global economic crisis was felt. Many countries were affected by the impact of the situation. Even 1st-world countries was not an exception. In US, many businesses closed down because of increasing losses and the continuing financial instability. Until now the effects are still seen. Not even businesses were affected, even the labor forces. Up until now, unemployment rate rises dramatically over the world.

As quoted from the bizjournal.com's - article:

For the first time in more than a generation, every state in the union saw its unemployment rate rise last month. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor and Statistics, all 50 states and the District of Columbia recorded unemployment rate increases compared with the previous month and the prior year.

December marked the first time every state recorded a rise in monthly unemployment since the bureau began keeping such records in 1976.

In Texas, the unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent in December of 2007, 5.7 percent in November of 2008 and 6 percent last month.

Michigan and Rhode Island once again led the nation with the highest jobless rates at 10.6 percent and 10 percent respectively. Rhode Island’s rate is the highest in more than three decades. Arizona dropped 12,400 jobs in December and saw its unemployment rate rise to 6.9 percent.

The national unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent in December, up from 6.8 percent the previous month and from 4.9 percent a year earlier.

How will the world overcome this pending crisis? Is there something in store for those who are affected especially the labor forces?

Increasing rate of unemployment presents a major challenge for the government. O ne of this is the increase demand of welfare programs because of the consequences of poverty and in equality resulting from high unemployment.

Let us then focus in the Philippine setting. Where does the Philippine stands in this situation? Is our government capable of protecting it's citizens from this crisis?

For me, I still have doubts on the capabilities of our government. Even before this crisis emerges, unemployment rates are way beyond normal. The widening gap of th e rich and the poor continues. Poverty is slowly tearing every families. Not to mention the political issues that keeps our government's attention from focusing on more important matters related to the welfare of the country.

But I still hope that everything will fall in their rightful places. Hopefully our leaders, the leaders we put our trusts to alleviate the country's long list of problems will stop their never-ending, head-on collisions with other leaders. Hopefully we'd be able to solve or even alleviate the problems caused by this crisis.

Love on the Pit Stop

I want to share this wonderful read made by my shobe Shii. A very splendid work indeed. Made me realize the worth of the message it is sharing. ^_^

LOVE ON THE PIT STOP

by Shiriel Magalong

I am a woman, created to love a man.

People would usually ask me,
"Why don't you have a boyfriend?"
My answer varies, though concludes to one point,
One point into which the world barely understands.

This answer i would always point out,
"I want to become the best woman i could be...
Before i would finally meet 'him'..."
A confused face they'd always reply.

"Why don't you try? You're at the right age."
But they don't understand my point,
It's not about the age, but the maturity of the heart.
Age can never pass for maturity.

"Why don't you try dating? To know some guys."
They always think of the 'dating game'
But i don't want to be a busy bee,
that goes from one flower to another.

"I think you're just scared."
I'm just preserving my purity,
To give to the one, giving the best of me,
For I want my very first to be my last.

"Just get some experience."
And what? Fall for the devils trap?
No way man! I'm not into games,
Love is a serious thing, i consider as a sacred gift.

"You're Just paranoid, you're TOO careful, you're just weak."
Paranoid I am not, but weak I am,
but so what? At least I'm not the one in tears.
I know my limits, my weakness is my shield.

"I can't wait for you that long, why can't it be now?"
If you can't wait for me for just several years
What more if we are together forever?
I am not some toy that could be easily exchanged.

"What if you find another guy better than I?"
Then be the best man you could ever be,
while i do the same, and if i choose someone else,
At least you became a better man.

"Can I wait for you?"
Easy to say, but hard to do.
Waiting is not an easy task,
but if you can do it, what more could i ask?:)

"What do you look for a guy?"
Sincerity is all i need,
Trust is a must in every promise,
but mostly a heart that puts God first before me.

...

My pit stop ends here,
time to get back on track,
and leave these questions and thoughts behind,
moving forward and never looking back.

For i am still on the journey,
Of being the best woman i can be,
For the man who deserves my love,
For all eternity.

:)

My Review Blog

2

Posted in , , , ,

Just started a new blog - Reviews in my Head. I intend to put my movie and anime reviews and updates in that blog. To start with I posted a welcome message and a review on the movie I watched this morning.

Hopefully I would be able to keep up with having two blogs now. I was a little bit lazy updating my blog last year so this will be a great challenge for me to be updating two blogs. Though I am not new in blogging, I am still new in blogging community, increasing traffics, technorati, blog catalog, mybloglog, and other new stuffs that emerges and change blogging. I hope I could learn those things so that I can improve my blog. Of course, any criticisms and comments will be appreciated and will be looked into for points for improvements. So much to learn, and as the saying goes, there's alwasy room for improvements.

Blogging Back

1

Posted in , ,

I just made up my mind. I'm giving paid blogging a shot. I was inspired by a friend to write and while writing, is earning. Isn't that cool? She even earned much by just blogging and I am so envious of her.

I never write when my mind does not have anything to talk about to. Even if there is - Sports, Music, Movies, Literature, or Personal, it will not matter unless there's this urgency and need to write something or voice something out. I always had my own views in each information I came across to but I don't know if it is worth putting in my blog. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Writing is not new to me anymore. I used to write poems and short stories in my early days. I even got a notebook or two filled with short poems and scribbled short stories. I even collected quotes. Hahaha... those were the days.

For me, blogging is just an outlet. I voice out my opinion on something in blogging but not that often. Hopefully I can practice my writing by this decision I made. Money does not really matter but earning while doing what you like - your hobby is not a bad thing either.

As of now, I'm planning to write blogs that involved in Movie & Anime Reviews, IT related news and tutorials, and Point of Views (Personal and Public) in certain topics. I hope I can do it.

Fortunate Are Us

Yesterday while I was strolling on the grounds of Victoria Plaza while waiting for a friend to arrive, a young 'yagit' (kung tawagin pa nila) girl surprised me. I was about to make her go away when she hesitatingly said and at the same time pushing her hands in front of me:

"Kol, naa kay pambaon. wala man gud koy baon. Gutom kaayo ko kol."
~o~
"Uncle, do you have any change to spare? I don't have any to buy food. I am so hungry."

I was a bit surprised and a little irritated because of calling me "Kol". But then I stop amidst what I would have done as usual - particular situation is not the same as any other situations where I'll just pretend I don't see or hear anybody. I then managed to stare at her. She's carrying a heavy-looking backpack and I noticed her blouse and skirts are dirtier as if it was her only uniform and doesn't have a spare. Her hair is a little ruffly and looks uncombed for days.

But then I was a little bit more distracted by the look in her eyes. The eyes of not just pain, poverty, weary, shame or any whatelseses. It's the look of HOPE. Maybe she's hoping not just that I give her something, it could be the hope of a new better life. I saw hope - a faint one. And I was then baffled thus putting me in deep thoughts.

I gave her all the coins that I could find in my pockets and watched her as she walks away feeling contented as if she's able for the day - that what I gave her is enough to make it through until the next time she will go out again and hope and ask for somebody else for baon again.

I got me wondering if I were in her shoes, what will I do. Will I be like her? Can I be that courageous? or will I falter and be ashamed?

As I walked out of the vicinity of the place and while in the taxi with my friend, I can't helped but think how lucky I am to live without having to beg, without having to walk and hope that what I get will make me through until the next time. How fortunate am I compared to her who at the early age has to strive and put extra effort each day.

That's why whenever I tend to do something that seems a little out of bounds and tend to be lazy. I'll just think of that little girl who at the early age is learning the walks of life the hard way. I hope and pray that that girl will have something good this year. And by the end of day, that little 'yagit' girl inspires me.

Must Read!!! When We Were Just Kids :D

Grabbed from Dirk's blog.

Nag enjoy akong bumasa neto.

Favorite mo yung Sonic, Mario at Street Fighter at Tetris.

• Nagwa-watusi ka kapag New Year kahit pinapagalitan ka ng nanay mo. ]

• Sinasabi mo sa kaklase mo na "Liars go to hell" kapag tingin mo nagsisinungaling sya. "Cross my heart, hope to die" kapag nangangako ka. "Period no erase" kapag gusto mo walang kumontra sayo.

• Wala pang PS/PS2, XBox, Wii, atbp. noon.

• Isa dito ay theme song mo: "I Swear" by All 4 One, "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes (And I say, Hey ey ey ey ey ey. I said hey, What's goin on!), "Zombie" by Cranberries.

• Tape pa ang uso, di CD or MP3 players. Pag gusto mo yung kanta kailangan tantyahin mo kung ilang seconds i-rewind yun para mabilis paulit-ulitin.

• Kinakanta nyo dati sa school yung "Heal the World", "Tell the World of His Love", "Jubilee Song", etc.

Kami inyong ipaglaban! Sugod, sugod laban maskuman, ipaglaban nyo ang katarungan.. Sige, sige laban maskuman.."

• Sinubaybayan mo ang Sarah ang Munting Prinsesa, Julio at Julia, at Cedi. Pinanood mo pa nga yung movie version ng Sarah ang Munting Prinsesa with Camille Prats.

• Alam mo din yung "Ang Pulubi at ang Prinsesa" with Camille Prats and Angelica Panganiban.

Akala mo nga mag-dyowa o mag-asawa sina Kuya Bodjie at Ate Sheena.

Jolina and Marvin.

• Alam mo yung commercial ng Tender Juicy hotdog na ganito: "Dear diary, Carlo sat beside me today. He's so cute! Sabi niya I'm pretty kaya lang I'm fat."

Haha.

Movie List DB

Posted in , , ,

I've been thinking about making a online directory of my movies as a projet. It's for the convenience of people who always asks me if I have downloaded new movies. It would be easy for them to check out those movies I had.

Another reason for this is to start practicing my programming skills. Lately, I have been learning new things from work and I wanted to preserve it into something I can see. That led me into thinking of making a simple but useful website.

If I wanted to pursue this, I have to plan things out first. I have to rekindle my designing skills again (I don't dream of making a techie and glamorous/flashy website though). Hope I can start this project soon.

Well… This list isn’t complete. There’s a lot of movies I saw since my birth lol. I don’t think this survey is true. I had watched movies beyond 85 – or more that 85 (maybe 2x or 3x this number) and I had a great life. Never had a dull moment. :D

SQL SubSelect

I came across this examples online when I am looking for a solution in selecting data from database that starts with numbers only.

SQL Subselect

SQL Subselect Example One

Q: What Harrison Ford movies were made in 1984?

Select Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and Film_Title in
(Select Film_Title
From Film_Table
Where Film_Year equals "1984");

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Note: The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all movies made in 1984. Combined the selects get all Harrison Ford movies made in 1984.

SQL Subselect Example Two - Not In

Q: What Harrison Ford movies were not made in 1984?

Select Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and Film_Title not in
(Select Film_Title
From Film_Table
Where Film_Year equals "1984");

Air Force One
American Graffiti
Apocalypse Now
Blade Runner
Clear and Present Danger
Frantic
Hanover Street
Heroes
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Patriot Games
Presumed Innocent
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Regarding Henry
Return of the Jedi
Six Days Seven Nights
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
The Frisco Kid
The Fugitive
The Mosquito Coast
Working Girl

Note: The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all movies made in 1984. Combined with a not the selects get all Harrison Ford movies not made in 1984.

SQL Subselect Example Three - A Correlated Subquery

Q: What movies has Harrison Ford acted in with George Lucas directing?

Select Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title
From Thespian_Film_Table
Where Thespian_Last_Name = "Ford"
and Thespian_First_Name = "Harrison"
and exists
(Select *
From Director_Film_Table
Where Director_Last_Name = "Lucas"
and Director_First_Name = "George"
and Director_Film_Table.Film_Title
= Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title);

American Graffiti
Star Wars
Note: A correlated subquery directly ties the table nested in the subquery back to a table in the query.
The first select gets all Harrison Ford movies. The second select gets all Harrison Ford movies Directed by George Lucas. The statement "and Director_Film_Table.Film_Title = Thespian_Film_Table.Film_Title" in the subselect is where both tables are "tied together" or correlated.

A Penny...

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.

He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts.

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her.

Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says."

She read the words "United States of America."

"No, not that; read further."

"One cent?"

"No, keep reading."

"In God we Trust?"

"Yes!"

"And?"

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!

And, God is patient...

Have a blessed day!!

Decisions

Have you ever been into a split decisions that you are afraid to make but have no choice but to do so? Or have you ever been into a situation where all is left but to regret the decision we have made after all ?

Lately, I have pushed myself into many situations. Situations that could thwart me hard into thinking or leave me nothing but to make a hasty but unpondered decisions. Those decisions that I don't want to chose yet I have to. Decisions that if left unmade could be troublesome sooner or later.

I don't think I have made the right decisions in my life either. Some of them I have regrets some of them I don't. Regrets that I have for all those mistakes I have made in my past. After all, mistakes don't leave trails of emptiness and sadness in our life all the time. It also leave a lesson or two that we could ponder on. Lessons that must be instilled not only in our very consciousness but also within our hearts.

Maybe, when the next repeating situations pass by, I can make a good choice. As what they say, Experience is a good teacher.
